On Freedom
“The disciple turned to the master:
- Tell me, what is freedom?
- Which freedom? - asked the master. - The first freedom is foolishness. It is like the horse that neighs and throws off its rider. Yet later it feels the rider’s grip even more strongly. The second freedom is remorse. It is like the helmsman who, after a shipwreck, remains on the wreckage instead of climbing into the lifeboat. The third freedom is insight. It comes after foolishness and remorse. It is like the straw that bends in the wind and - because where it is weak, it yields to the wind - remains standing.
- Is that all? - asked the disciple.
- Some believe that they themselves are searching for the truth of their soul. Yet in reality, it is the Great Soul that thinks and inquires through them. Like nature, this Great Soul can allow itself many mistakes, for it endlessly and effortlessly replaces poor players with new ones. But to the one who allows it to think, it sometimes grants a little space to move and play, and - like the river carrying the swimmer who lets himself be carried by the current - it brings him safely to shore through the concentrated power of their resonance.”
